KEM Hospital and Seth G S Medical College

Founded in 1926, the Seth GordhandasSunderdas Medical College (GSMC) and the King Edward VII Memorial (KEM) Hospital are amongst the foremost teaching and medical care providing institutions in India. The medical college (school) provides annual training to about 2000 students in undergraduate, postgraduate and superspecialty medical courses; in undergraduate and postgraduate physical and occupational therapy; and Masters and PhD courses in various allied specialties. A nursing school is also maintained by these institutions. With about 390 staff physicians and 550 resident doctors, the 2250 bedded hospital treats about 2 million out-patients and 85,000 in-patients annually and provides both basic care and advanced treatment facilities in all fields of medicine and surgery.

Funded mainly by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, these institutions render yeomen service , virtually free of cost , mostly to the underprivileged sections of the society. Seth G. S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai has been selected as a Regional Resource Center for Western Region under National Medical College Network (NMCN) project.5 Government Medical Collegesfrom the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa are networked with GSMC. The connectivity provided by National Knowledge Network (NKN) is proposed for connectivity/networking with the aforesaid medical colleges for the purpose of Tele-education, Tele-CME, Tele-specialist consultations, Tele-follow-up and Access to Digital Library etc in the first phase.

In Maharashtra under NHM, telemedicine facility network has been established at 62 patient nodes of which 23 are district & 39 are sub district/rural Hospitals. 6 specialty nodes are situated in 5 Medical Colleges (Govt. Medical Colleges Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mumbai, Pune, KEMH (Mumbai) and one private hospital (Nanavati hospital, Mumbai) . Expertsfrom specialty nodes provide their opinion.Also, this facility functions as a Knowledge Centre for tele-education including CME’s.
