IIT-Kanpur, PGI Lucknow join hands to set up healthcare robotics CoE

There are many parts of India which are hard-to-reach, isolated and have acute shortage of qualified doctors. The most common ailments that such rural populations face are Malaria, Diarrhoea, Tuberculosis, Respiratory Tract Infections, Maternity Complications, Animal and Snake Bites, Malnutrition and Anaemia. With such limited health care available, mortality rate in these areas is usually high. Even in the urban and semi-urban settings, we need to make available smart health care facility to our people. We have situations where a child falling sick at night with no doctor around and no medicine available, pregnant ladies can’t have regular home health check-ups, elders and chronic patients need regular check-ups for symptom monitoring etc. IIT Kanpur is setting up a Centre of Excellence in Telemedicine and Healthcare Robotics to develop technologies that can provide such healthcare facilities as needed by our population. SGPGI, Lucknow has rich experience in Telemedicine. Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Abhay Karandikar while addressing the gathering stated, “This MoU paving the way for collaboration between an engineering centre of excellence and a clinical centre of excellence is a step in the right direction. He also stated that this collaboration will allow scientists and engineers of IIT Kanpur to have the opportunity to access the advice of specialized doctors working at SGPGI, Lucknow.”
