About RRC South I

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)

JIPMER traces its origin to the ‘Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry’, which was established by the then French Government in Puducherry in 1823.
In 1956, the Government of India decided to replace this with a new medical college, and a new hospital was constructed and was inaugurated in 1964. JIPMER was initially a part of the Directorate General of Health Services under the Ministry of Health, Government of India. In 2008, with the passage of the JIPMER Act, it acquired the status of an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and was also declared as an Institution of National Importance.
JIPMER is charged with the responsibility of providing teaching facilities and patient care services of the highest order and of undertaking high-quality research in the field of healthcare. Its main campus is located in Puducherry, and is spread over 192 acres. It houses the administrative block, an academic centre building, a nursing
college, nine hospital blocks, an institute of public health, an auditorium, two guest houses, several accessory buildings for providing essential services and a residential complex.
A second campus, located nearly 150 Km south of the main campus, at Karaikal, a part of the Union Territory of Puducherry, has been functioning since 2016. The activities are carried out from three rented building complexes (the main Abdul Kalam Campus, another smaller campus called the Arsalar Complex and a hostel facility set up in 7 apartment blocks), with the clinical teaching being undertaken at the General Hospital, Karaikal. Construction of its own campus in two pieces of land measuring around 40 acre each – one housing the college, hostels and hospital, and the other housing the residences for faculty and staff – has started. In the year under review, JIPMER received another 51 acres of land at Sedarapet in Puducherry for development of its third campus, which will provide for future expansion of the Institute’s services.
JIPMER is one of the few public-sector institutions in the country that provide teaching at undergraduate, post-graduate and superspeciality levels, conducts high quality research and provides specialty care of the highest order in nearly all specialties and sub-specialties of medicine.
