Founded in 1926, the Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC) and the King Edward VII Memorial (KEM) Hospital are amongst the foremost teaching and medical care providing institutions in India. The medical college (school) provides annual training to about 2000 students in undergraduate, postgraduate and super speciality medical courses; in undergraduate and postgraduate physical and occupational therapy; and Masters and PhD courses in various allied specialties. These institutions also maintain a nursing school. With about 390 staff physicians and over 600 resident doctors, the 2250 bedded hospital treats about 2 million out-patients and over 67000 in-patients (2022) and provides both basic care and advanced treatment facilities in all fields of medicine and surgery.
Funded mainly by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai), these institutions render yeomen service, virtually free of cost , mostly to the underprivileged sections of the society. Seth G. S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai has been selected as a Regional Resource Center for Western Region under National Medical College Network (NMCN) project. Five Government Medical Colleges from the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa are networked with GSMC. The connectivity provided by National Knowledge Network (NKN) is proposed for connectivity/networking with the aforesaid medical colleges for the purpose of Tele-education, Tele-CME, Tele-specialist consultations, Tele-follow-up and Access to Digital Library etc in the first phase. E-learning modules have been recently introduced.
In 2022, additional centres of excellence have been designated. Centers of Excellence for Rare Disease in India by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India under the provisions of the National Policy for Rare Diseases 2021; Development of centre of excellence for interventional aortic aneurysm procedures in collaboration with Department of Radiology ; a One Stop Centre of Excellence for comprehensive care of survivors of sexual assault in Department of Forensic medicine and Toxicology.
